Bespoke Flooring

You can design the floor you want using our bespoke offering.

If you are in the process of a complete makeover and have an interiors colour palette that you want your wood floor to complement, then this might be the route for you. In terms of the tones and shades that can be achieved, the options are limitless. The one thing we guarantee is that you will end up with a unique floor that can be as impactful or as subtle as you choose.

All our bespoke floors are hand-finished and made to order. The downside to this is that the lead time for these floors is eight to 10 weeks, depending on the size of your order. The upside is that we have complete knowledge of all the materials used to create your floor: the quality of the oak, the plywood used to create the engineered wood floor, as well as the adhesives used to bond the layers together.

We also have control over the final appearance of the floor: you may want a classic rustic floor full of character, or a prime-grade floor with minimal knots, or something in between like a natural grade. We also have complete control over the stains, lacquers and oils used to create your floor – and the cost is more affordable than you might think.

Sourcing to Order

If you have seen something you particularly like, Hummingbird can source it for you.

Hummingbird has access to a range of flooring manufactures: pre-finished engineered hardwood flooring; bespoke wood flooring; traditional parquet; contemporary parquet; laminate; as well as Karndean luxury vinyl tiles. We can also go beyond these materials to replicate our competitors’ very expensive floors – at a reduced cost. All our wood flooring is sustainably sourced and we only supply Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified wood.

Installation Services

Hummingbird can install engineered flooring, parquet, laminate or vinyl flooring.

Once you have committed to a wood floor, the next step is to install it – we would always recommend a professional floor fitter to carry out the work: they have the experience to do it efficiently with minimum waste, to create the right visual appeal, and to ensure the finished installation shows your wooden floor at its best. This process entails an initial site visit where the team will discuss the aesthetics of the installation, examine the sub- floor, highlight any difficulties, and work out how to overcome them. Collectively, Hummingbird’s three installation teams have more than 90 years’ experience in the industry and are innovative and creative. Customers are sometimes led to believe their builder can do the job, and in some instances they can.
From our case studies, you will see that Hummingbird has experience in installing on small and large homes; we are used to working on major residential developments and large hotels. The one thing we will not do, under any circumstances, is cut corners.

Advice Centre

We offer a free advice service – any query you may have don’t hesitate to call.

In the event that a Hummingbird floor is to be installed by others, we are happy to provide free advice and support on all installation issues. These could be: sub-floor preparation; increased sub-floor moisture levels; correct underlays; or correct installation methods. Our ultimate goal is for every wood floor supplied by Hummingbird to look fantastic. A poor installation can make even the best wood floor look terrible and can also reduce the longevity of wood flooring.

Please note: a site visit is not included in the free advice, and will incur a small fee, which is refundable if Hummingbird goes on to do the installation.

Sub-floor preparation

Hummingbird floors need good sub-floors.

Almost all the problems that arise with a wooden floor installation come as a result of a poor sub-floor. Your surface must be level and solid, and the moisture levels controlled. For example, creaking floorboards are generally caused when loose floorboards in the sub-floor have not been fixed prior to laying the new one on top. Hollow footfalls, which are caused when there is a small void underneath a board, usually occur because the sub-floor is uneven or there is inadequate underlay. For a new-build project, Hummingbird will take moisture readings one week prior to the install and, if required, a liquid damp-proof membrane (DPM) can be applied to block moisture seepage.

When working on a refurbishment project, once the existing finishes have been stripped back, Hummingbird will attend the site to take the required moisture readings and inspect the quality of the sub-floor. If the sub-floor is found to be inadequate, we will discuss the various ways to remedy the issue. These works can either be undertaken by Hummingbird or we can advise your team of builders.

Finishing Touches

We offer a range of accessories which can be stained to match your floor and to add a contemporary flair.

This is where Hummingbird excels. All your timber will be stained to match your chosen floor, including end bars used with patio doors, radiator roses and even stair nosings. Where possible, we will avoid using door profiles that sit on top of the wood flooring. We will always try to use door profiles that are discreet and level with the two types of floor they are trying to marry. Our preferred profiles are metal inserts which come in different finishes, offering a sleek, contemporary look.
